What Is Fractionated Coconut Oil?
Fractionated coconut oil is refined coconut oil that primarily consists of caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10) medium-chain triglycerides.
Unlike fresh virgin coconut oil, the fractionated one will remain liquid even at cold temperatures because its lauric acid (C12) has been removed via a process called fractionation.
Is fractionated coconut oil the same as mct oil?
Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as MCT oil even though they both contain the same fatty acid composition. The primary reason for this is because unlike mct oil, fractionated coconut oil is not produced in a food-grade facility under conditions that are safe for human consumption.
3 Differences Between Fractionated Coconut Oil and MCT Oil
Let’s discuss some of the key differences between fractionated coconut oil and mct oil.
1. Mct oil is not a placebo
A placebo is a fake replica of something original or something fake that’s made to look like it has a real impact.
If something is used as a placebo, it’s believed to have little to no effect on the experiment. Fractionated coconut oil is used as a placebo in the study below.
A 12-week study investigated the effect of fractionated fish oil on 16 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Along with the treatment drugs, the patients were given either fractionated fish oil or fractionated coconut oil as a control.
Key finding: Fractionated coconut oil is used as a placebo, which means the researchers knew it wouldn’t have a significant impact on the study. Mct oil, on the other hand, is always used as the experimental item, the one being tested, and it has proven health benefits.
2. Fractionated coconut oil is labeled for external use only
We looked at all the popular fractionated coconut oil sellers on Amazon, and nearly all of them have named it as a carrier oil for skin and hair uses.
A few of them have been transparent enough to mention that it’s only for external use and that it should not be ingested.

Key finding: Unlike mct oil that’s sold as a dietary supplement, fractionated coconut oil is sold for only topical use. Some honest sellers have even put a disclaimer saying that it’s only for external use.
3. We asked them why
We contacted ten popular fractionated coconut oil manufacturers on amazon and asked them why their oil is not safe for consumption.
Three have gotten back so far, and here’s what they have to say:
VivaNaturals: Fractionated coconut oil products are manufactured for external use only as a beauty oil (haircare, skincare, body care). This oil has not passed the industry measures to be sold as food, and as such, you should not consume it internally. As for MCT Oil, it is marketed and sold as a food product and therefore is produced in a food-grade facility.
