The department of medicine from the University of Freiburg, Germany, conducted a study to determine the best time of the day to test ketones in the urine [2].
Twenty healthy participants were instructed to follow the standard keto diet for six weeks. They were allowed to eat as they wished without any caloric restriction. However, they had to make sure 80% of their daily calories came from fat, 15% from protein, and 5% from fat.
During the sixth week, the participants were instructed to measure their urine ketone and blood ketone level for 24 hours from 7 am till 7 am the next day.
The tests were taken every hour and, every three hours during the day and, once at 3 am in the night.
They measured the urine ketone level 18 times and blood 8 times in total.
